Extending your Work Permit

To extend your Temporary status in Canada as a worker, you may be required to apply for a Labour Market Opinion (LMO) or apply for nomination through one of the Provincial Nominee Programs. In some circumstances a person may be exempt from requiring an LMO or nomination to extend a work permit, or they may be able to apply for an open work permit.

In April 2011 immigration rules will come into effect capping the maximum number of years a temporary foreign worker can remain in Canada on temporary work permits at four years. If you have been working in Canada for a number of years, you may have a few options for permanent immigration to Canada.

For temporary foreign workers it is very important to plan ahead because extending a work permit can take months.
