Outline - Spousal Sponsorship and Common Law Sponsorship

Successfully sponsoring your spouse or partner will grant them permanent residence in Canada. Receiving Permanent resident status in Canada allows your partner and your dependent children to live and work anywhere in Canada with you and enjoy many of the benefits of a Canadian Citizen. You may qualify to sponsor your common-law partner or spouse if you are a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada.  To view some potential options please visit the Canadian Immigration Options for my Partner or Spouse page.

Spousal or Common-Law Sponsorship Applications are a two (2) step process and you may have the option to apply from Within Canada or Outside of Canada. Depending on your circumstances and what is most important to you, there are some pros and cons to applying within or outside of Canada

In general, the first step involves the evaluation of the sponsor to determine if the Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident meets the sponsorship requirements. If the sponsor meets the requirements, the application will commence to Step 2.

The second step of the process is the admissibility check of the foreign national. At this point the application may be transferred to another CIC office and CIC will complete their medical, security and background checks on the applicant. CIC may choose to contact the applicant for an interview at which time the final decision on permanent residence status can be made. Once the applicant is approved for this step, they will receive permanent resident status in Canada.
